Acupuncture Tops Drugs for Sty Treatment

A randomized trial finds that acupuncture is more effective than medications for the treatment of a sty (hordeolum), which can be a small red lump at the edge of the eyelid.

Pain reduction and swelling size are measured for the acupuncture and medication groups, one receiving acupuncture and the other local applications of two antibiotics.

On day 7 of the daily treatment cycle, the acupuncture group showed a 94.1% improvement compared to the medication group’s 80.4% improvement rate.

In this study, acupuncture also shortens the duration of the sty. The acupuncture point used was Erjian (Tip of the Ear, M-HN-10).
