Researchers looked at how effective four facial acupuncture treatments are on patients suffering from acne vulgaris. After the treatment, the researchers found significant reductions in acne papules and nodules. There were additional objective measurements that showed reductions in local inflammation of the skin and tissues. A survey recorded subjective satisfaction from patients as well.

The clinical data showed improvements in acne. The Investigators also wanted to look at the safety of acupuncture as well as effectiveness. The Investigators recorded that no serious treatment related adverse effects occurred as a result of acupuncture treatment. Thus, the research team came to the conclusion that standardized facial acupuncture is safe and effective for the treatment of facial acne and its associated inflammatory conditions.

This new research agrees with a recent meta-analysis of 43 acupuncture studies investigating the efficaciousness of acupuncture for the treatment of acne. Approximately 3,500 patients were reviewed in the study. The investigators realized that acupuncture exerts a synergistic medicinal effect on patients with acne when combined with a standard therapeutic regime. Acupuncture significantly enhanced acne treatment outcomes over patients receiving herbal medicine only or face masks as a standalone treatment. The Investigators concluded that acupuncture is safe and effective for the treatment of acne. It is interesting to note that Cupping also enhanced outcomes.
